A bold step towards inclusive education has been taken in Waterford, as Tánaiste Simon Harris officially inaugurated a new special education class at St Ursula's School. This move is part of a larger initiative to address the growing demand for specialized educational resources in the region.
The expansion plan includes an impressive seven new special education classes for the upcoming 2026/27 school year, with a mix of post-primary and primary classes. This initiative aims to provide much-needed support to families in the area, ensuring that every child has access to the tailored education they deserve.
The schools set to benefit from this expansion are diverse, ranging from Ard Scoil na nDéise to Mount Sion CBS. During his visit, Tánaiste Harris emphasized the importance of creating learning environments that cater to the unique needs of each child. He acknowledged the challenges faced by parents in finding suitable educational placements and supports, especially when distance becomes a factor.
"It's encouraging to see children thriving in environments designed for them, but we must address the obstacles parents encounter. We've announced several new special classes, and there's more to come," Tánaiste Harris stated.
Minister of State John Cummins praised the initiative, highlighting its response to the rising demand for specialized education. He recognized St Ursula's as a shining example of collaboration between schools, parents, and the government, resulting in positive outcomes for students.
