At the age of 22, Nguyen, a senior majoring in English Language Teacher Education at the University of Da Nang, received acceptance letters from both Oxford and Cambridge, two of the world's most selective universities. This achievement is all the more impressive considering that Oxford, a top-ranked institution, typically requires candidates to undergo an interview process. What sets Nguyen apart is her unique research focus on Taylor Swift's song lyrics, a topic that seamlessly blends her academic field with a lifelong fascination. Her research delves into the use of conceptual metaphors in Swift's lyrics, exploring how emotions are mapped onto physical spaces, such as love as a journey or fame as a kingdom. This innovative approach not only earned her recognition at the city level and an encouragement award from the Ministry of Education and Training but also became the cornerstone of her Oxford application. Nguyen's personal statement, opening with lyrics from Swift's 'Long Live', underscores her understanding of how metaphorical language can transform English teaching.
