Daylesford Op Shop's Fight Against Bed Bugs: A Devastating Donation (2026)

The future of the Daylesford Community Op Shop is now uncertain, following a bed bug outbreak triggered by a single donation that has unfortunately led to the destruction of merchandise valued at thousands of dollars.

It all began when a volunteer discovered a bag that contained some type of fabric. What happened next was nothing short of shocking: a swarm of sizeable bed bugs immediately emerged and crawled up her arm.

"She didn’t even get the chance to fully approach the bag before they scurried up her arm," recounted volunteer Michelle Clifford. "She’s traumatized and has bites all over her body."

Bed bugs, small wingless insects known for their blood-feeding habits, tend to react quickly when they sense light. They don’t simply bite and vanish; instead, they linger until they are satiated, after which they hide in various places such as clothing, bedding, and upholstery, where they can reproduce.

"They don’t just bite and fall off," Ms. Clifford stressed. "They stay around and, once they’ve finished feeding, they tuck themselves away in couches, clothes, and bedding to breed."

As soon as the bag was opened, the shop had to be shut down within minutes. All volunteers present were quickly provided with eucalyptus oil and other cleaning solutions to treat their skin.

These pests typically feed every five to ten days but can endure several months without a blood meal.

Many items deemed infested were disposed of, leading to significant financial loss. "Thousands of dollars worth of merchandise has been discarded, and the cleaning costs have already surpassed $3,000," Ms. Clifford reported.

"We had to remove all items from the shop… and so much stock has been lost," she lamented.

"We've arranged for professional cleaning services and hazard teams, outfitted in [hazmat] suits, to handle the situation."

The donations that were infested, along with any others suspected to be contaminated, were safely disposed of by a specialized cleaning company.

Ms. Clifford expressed concerns regarding the possibility that the donation might have been made knowingly, given that adult bugs were visible crawling on the volunteer.

"There were adult bugs climbing up her arm," she explained. "If the donors were unaware, it likely would have contained only eggs that wouldn’t have hatched yet. I’m trying to look on the bright side, hoping they genuinely didn’t know or that they were in a desperate situation and didn’t know how to deal with the infestation."

Looking ahead, Ms. Clifford indicated that the store cannot reopen until at least two more deep cleanings are completed, a process that could take up to ten days. Even afterward, the shop’s financial viability remains in jeopardy.

"We are the sole op shop in the shire that operates entirely on a volunteer basis, with all profits reinvested back into the community," Ms. Clifford emphasized. "Every person in our community relies on us for affordable clothing or access to vouchers."

To help ensure the shop’s survival, a community barbecue is scheduled for Sunday, aiming to raise funds necessary for continued operation.
