The Canterbury Bulldogs' season has taken a dramatic turn, and former star Michael Ennis is calling for a major shake-up. With their finals hopes all but dashed after a disappointing loss to South Sydney Rabbitohs, Ennis believes it's time for the club to reconsider their strategic approach.
In a year that started with high expectations, the Bulldogs have struggled to find consistency, particularly in their attack. Despite some promising moments, including a near-upset against the Roosters, the team's performance against Souths was a major setback, according to Ennis.
"The Bulldogs' season has been a rollercoaster ride," Ennis said. "They started strong but struggled to adapt to the quick ruck speed early on. As the season progressed and the rules were adjusted, they found some defensive rhythm, but their attack remains a concern."
One of the key areas Ennis highlights is the team's spine, including the roles of Lachlan Galvin, Stephen Crichton, Connor Tracey, and Bailey Hayward. While Galvin has shown promise at halfback, questions remain about his long-term suitability in that position. Crichton's move to five-eighth has impacted the team's attack, and Ennis believes he should return to his natural position at centre.
"Crichton is an exceptional centre, and his move to the halves has taken away some of the Bulldogs' attacking potency," Ennis explained. "Galvin is a talented half, but I think he could excel at six. The team needs a true seven to complete their spine."
Ennis also raised concerns about the creativity and impact of Tracey and Hayward, suggesting they lack the spark needed to propel the team into the top four.
"The Bulldogs need to seriously evaluate their options moving forward," he continued. "While Crichton's unpredictability has been a plus, I don't see him as a long-term solution at five-eighth. The team has some promising young talent coming through, like Mitch Woods and Alex Conti, who could provide the necessary creativity."
As the season draws to a close, the Bulldogs face a crucial decision-making period. With their premiership ambitions on the line, the club must carefully consider Ennis' insights and make strategic changes to ensure a successful future.
