Your Doctor Is Already Using AI for Health Care – Should You?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept in health care – it’s here, and it’s already in use by doctors and hospitals. But here’s where it gets controversial: should you, as a patient, embrace this technology, or approach it with caution? And this is the part most people miss: while AI has the potential to revolutionize health care, its reliability and ethical implications are still hotly debated.
Just a couple of years ago, relying on a general chatbot for medical advice seemed like a risky gamble. A study revealed that ChatGPT accurately diagnosed only 2 out of 10 pediatric cases, and Google Gemini’s early suggestions included bizarre advice like eating small rocks or using glue to keep cheese on pizza. In one alarming instance, a nutritionist ended up hospitalized after following ChatGPT’s recommendation to replace salt with sodium bromide. These examples highlight the dangers of trusting AI blindly.
But the landscape is evolving rapidly. Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are now launching health-specific chatbots designed for both consumers and health care professionals. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health allows users to connect their medical records for more personalized responses, while ChatGPT for Healthcare is already assisting hospitals nationwide. Anthropic’s Claude for Healthcare aims to streamline tasks for doctors and improve patient-provider communication. These tools promise to make health care more accessible and efficient, but they also raise important questions about accuracy, privacy, and the role of human oversight.
What sets these health-specific chatbots apart? According to Torrey Creed, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, these tools are trained exclusively on health care data, eliminating unreliable sources like social media. Additionally, they are required to comply with HIPAA regulations, ensuring that users’ private data remains secure. However, the question remains: Can we fully trust AI to make critical health decisions?
I spoke with Raina Merchant, executive director of the Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation at UPenn, to gain insight into how AI is being integrated into health care and what patients need to know. Merchant emphasizes that while AI has immense potential, it should be used cautiously. For instance, UPenn’s Chart Hero program acts like a ChatGPT embedded in a patient’s health record, helping doctors quickly access information and spend more time interacting with patients. Similarly, AI-powered messaging interfaces allow patients to ask questions anytime, with human oversight to ensure accuracy.
But here’s the catch: while AI can provide valuable guidance, it’s not a substitute for human judgment. Merchant advises using chatbots as tools to prepare for doctor visits or understand next steps, but not for making medical decisions. For example, if you have a low-grade fever, consulting a chatbot might help you gather information, but a physician should be involved in diagnosing and treating the condition.
So, how reliable are these health chatbots? They possess vast amounts of information, but their tendency to “hallucinate” or deviate from medical guidelines remains a concern. Merchant recommends verifying chatbot advice with trusted sources like the American Heart Association and relying on your instincts. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Privacy is another critical issue. While hospital-provided chatbots may offer transparency and data protection, Merchant warns against sharing personal details with unverified platforms. The question of who owns your data and how it’s used is still largely unanswered, leaving many patients wary.
